grub control ...that’s environment friendly!

By Jerry Moes

Here’s a popular and environment friendly way to control grubs in your lawn. ‘Beneficial Nematodes’ are microscopic and feed on insect larvae. In fact they are known to control more than 250 types of insects. We introduced these efficient pest controllers last year and our customers keep telling us how well they work. Nematodes are less expensive than traditional pesticides and are very easy to apply. They can store in a fridge for several weeks before applying although you may want to apply now. Two types of nematodes are ‘Heterorhabditis’ know as Guardian and ‘Steinernema’ known as Lawn Patrol. The reason they are so effective is that they reproduce rapidly and then go in search of new larvae and because 90% off all insects spend some of their life cycle in the ground, it makes for an effective combination. Nematodes should be applied in cooler and more moist weather conditions to facilitate entry into the soil such as in the evening. You should also consider applying once again in late summer once hot, dry weather has subsided. This is when many insects return to lay eggs.
